What it does

Betterview is AI-native property intelligence for insurers. Founded 2014; $15.5M raised before Nearmap acquired the company in December 2023. The product applies computer vision to aerial and ground imagery to identify and quantify property risk — roof condition, debris, overhanging vegetation, swimming pool — and feeds those signals into underwriting and inspection workflows.

Post-acquisition landscape. Inside Nearmap (which is inside Thoma Bravo), Betterview sits alongside itel and Nearmap's own imagery capture to form a property-intelligence platform covering underwriting and claims. Betterview and Nearmap remain distinct product surfaces; carriers can buy the imagery, the AI layer, or both.

Named customers. Nationwide and EMC Insurance participated as investor-customers across funding rounds and are named in the Nearmap acquisition press release. The individual carrier deployment surface is thinner than the strategic-investor surface — a pattern common among AI-native property vendors whose first sales are to their backers.

Where it sits in old → new → AI. Betterview is the AI-native layer above Nearmap's imagery rails. Cape Analytics (now Moody's) is its direct competitor and the closer fit on signal quality. The interesting procurement question for a US P&C carrier in 2026 is less Cape-vs-Betterview than whether to buy the AI layer alone, the imagery alone, or the combined platform.
